Accuracy
Credit reporting agencies must follow reasonable procedures to assure maximum possible accuracy of the information in your report. Companies that furnish information to the bureaus must not report information they know, or have reasonable cause to believe, is inaccurate.
Access and disputes
You are entitled to see the information in your file, and you have the right to dispute items you believe are inaccurate or incomplete. Disputes to the nationwide bureaus are free, and the bureaus must investigate.
Time limits on negative information
Most negative information can only be reported for a limited period — generally seven years, and up to ten years for certain bankruptcies. Once an item is past its reporting window, it should no longer appear.
Permissible purpose
Your credit report can only be accessed for specific, legally permitted reasons — for example, an application you make for credit, insurance, or housing. Access without a permissible purpose is not allowed.
